“I’m the leader! I get to decide if we go back down or not!”

Jenny took Wolf’s angry shouting in stride. In fact, she had adjusted her emotional responses to simply not react to anything he threw at her.

He ranted a while longer. More than 24 hours had passed since their encounter with the crew of the Bonne Chance, and Wolf had not been able to return to the surface despite all his efforts.

He even tried going down alone. Much to his surprise, the AI refused to port him to the surface.

In frustration, he took it out on Jenny. But Jenny simply smiled and listened quietly. She never yelled back.

To make matters worse, he could not do anything about it other than futilely berate her.

He could not hit her, either. It was not that she was a woman, he explained to Callahan. It was the fact she was some kind of super droid. He had no doubt she could best him in a fight, especially after what she did to the sailors in the pub.

After taking down all those men in a matter of seconds, Wolf was forced to reassess Jenny’s potential in combat. He experienced a dawning realization that their time in the game had not prepared the group for working with someone as capable as she was proving herself to be.

Jenny was nothing short of remarkable. Her physical skills were profound. They were . . . beyond human.

“But I’m still the leader of this group! I don’t care who you are, I’m the Commander! I make the calls!”

“It’s not your call in this case, Commander,” Jenny said, seizing on his choice of words and the pause he took while catching his breath. “There is an APB on the surface for all of us. Lutian authorities want to question us about the incident. And it’s something of a diplomatic question, one that involves all three AIs. There is absolutely no way we can go down to Lute’s surface again without being detained. Therefore, we’re not going back down, at least not until this mission is concluded. PLAIR is going to deny all requests.”

He fumed, staring at her. But he realized she was right. Because left unspoken was the fact that even without PLAIR on her side, she could call in Mr. Smithers if she deemed it necessary.

And if the brass got involved, something even worse might happen, he thought. Like, no shore leave for the remainder of the mission even without AI restrictions. It could be a year or more before he had another drink.

He shuddered at the thought.

In frustration he turned and stomped into his bunk room, the door swishing shut behind him.

The following day, Kim and Pak announced to the Cabellos their upgrades on the ship were complete.

“We also have the extra packages RNI requested, along with two spares,” Kim said. “So, seven total.”

“Thank you, meu amigo. And now I think we’d better be leaving before the Commander finds a way to sneak back down to the surface.”
